What is Microneedling and How Does It Work?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that can address a wide range of skin concerns. This technique involves using fine needles to create micro-punctures in the superficial layers of the skin. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin—two essential proteins that contribute to youthful, healthy skin.

At Ambrosia MD, we utilize the SkinPen for our microneedling procedures. The SkinPen’s precision microneedles penetrate the skin’s surface, initiating an immune response that disinfects the area, removes debris, increases blood flow, and activates the creation of new, collagen-rich tissue. The result is skin that looks smoother, more radiant, and visibly rejuvenated.

Benefits of Microneedling with SkinPen

Microneedling is not limited to the face; it can effectively treat other areas of the body that exhibit skin damage. The procedure offers a variety of benefits, including:

  • Reduction of Scars: Whether from acne, burns, or surgery, microneedling can significantly diminish the appearance of scars, promoting smoother skin.

  • Improvement of Skin Texture: Microneedling helps reduce the appearance of large pores, fine lines, and wrinkles, leading to a more even skin texture.

  • Enhanced Skin Tone: The treatment can lighten dark spots and address sun damage, resulting in a more uniform complexion.

  • Treatment of Hair Loss: Microneedling can also be used on the scalp to stimulate hair growth in those experiencing thinning hair.

  • Stretch Mark Reduction: The procedure is effective in minimizing the appearance of stretch marks, improving skin elasticity.

  • Safe for All Skin Types: Unlike other treatments that may pose risks for darker skin tones, microneedling with SkinPen is safe and minimizes the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Microneedling for Darker Skin Tones

One common concern for individuals with darker skin tones is the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, often associated with treatments that involve heat, such as radiofrequency microneedling and laser therapy. However, the SkinPen does not introduce additional heat, greatly reducing this risk. At Ambrosia MD, we are proud to offer microneedling as a safe and effective option for patients of all skin tones.

Enhancing Microneedling Results with PRF or Exosomes

At Ambrosia MD, we elevate the benefits of microneedling by pairing it with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) or exosomes. These additions accelerate healing and enhance the overall results, making your skin appear more youthful and revitalized. PRF is rich in growth factors and stem cells, while exosomes contain powerful regenerative properties, both of which complement the collagen-stimulating effects of microneedling.

Microneedling (SkinPen) FAQs

Microneedling (SkinPen) Frequently Asked Questions

  • Am I a candidate for microneedling?

Microneedling is effective for most men and women. However, those with active acne, open sores, or active infections should wait until these conditions have healed. It is also not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Does microneedling hurt?

To ensure comfort during the procedure, a numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. While you may experience minor discomfort after the treatment, this typically subsides within a day.

  • When can I see the results?

Results from microneedling are not immediate, as the body requires time to heal and produce new collagen. Typically, you will begin to see improvements after 3-4 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. For optimal results, maintaining a good skincare routine is essential.

  • How many treatments are required?

Most individuals require an initial series of 3-4 treatments every 4-6 weeks. To maintain the results, follow-up treatments once or twice a year are recommended.

  • What are the risks of microneedling?

Microneedling is a safe procedure with temporary side effects such as redness, swelling, and flaking. As the skin will be more sensitive after treatment, applying a mineral sunscreen is advised. Although the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is minimal, it is not entirely absent, and your provider will discuss this with you.

Preparing for Your Microneedling Session

Before your microneedling session, Dr. Maghera will review your current medications. It is important to discontinue the use of anti-inflammatory medications, such as Advil, Aleve, and Ibuprofen, at least one week prior to the procedure. Certain supplements, including omega-3s, turmeric, and ginger, should also be stopped one week before treatment to ensure the best results. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Ottawa office before your appointment.

Post-Procedure Care for Microneedling

Recovery after microneedling is generally mild. You may notice slight redness or inflammation, which should resolve within a few days. It’s recommended to avoid washing your face on the day of treatment, resuming normal cleansing the following day. For the first 24 hours after your session, avoid saunas, ice packs, and strenuous exercise. Additionally, refrain from using regular skincare products for 48 hours post-treatment to allow your skin to heal properly.
