What Causes Wrinkles?

Wrinkles are categorized into two main types: dynamic and static.

  • Dynamic Wrinkles form as a result of repetitive muscle movements. Every time you smile, frown, or squint, the muscles beneath your skin contract, leading to the formation of lines and creases. Initially, these wrinkles appear only when the muscles are engaged, but over time, they can become permanent, even when your face is at rest.

  • Static Wrinkles develop as the skin loses its natural elasticity and volume due to the decline in collagen and elastin. These wrinkles are visible even without muscle movement and are often the result of long-term exposure to the elements, lifestyle factors, and the natural aging process.

How Does Neurotoxin Treatment Work?

Neurotoxins, such as Botox® and Dysport®, are highly effective at reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. When injected into the targeted muscles, these neuromodulators block the nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract. By temporarily paralyzing the muscles, the overlying skin smooths out, leading to a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines.

The effects of neurotoxin treatments typically last between 3-4 months. It usually takes about 10-14 days for the full results to become visible, with the treatment reaching its peak effectiveness around 6-8 weeks. After this period, the neurotoxin gradually wears off, allowing the muscles to regain movement. Consistent treatments every 3-4 months can help maintain a smooth, youthful appearance and may even prevent the formation of new wrinkles.

Enhancing Skin Integrity with Additional Treatments

While neurotoxin treatments are effective for addressing dynamic wrinkles, it's also important to focus on the overall health and integrity of the skin to combat the signs of aging. At Ambrosia MD, we offer a variety of treatments designed to boost collagen and elastin production, which are crucial for maintaining firm, resilient skin. These treatments include:

  • Microneedling (SkinPen®): This minimally invasive procedure creates tiny punctures in the skin to stimulate the body's natural healing process, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin.

  • Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF): A regenerative treatment that uses growth factors from your own blood to promote collagen production and skin rejuvenation.

  • Exosomes (Elevai Exosomes): Advanced skincare treatment that delivers powerful signals to the skin, enhancing its ability to repair and regenerate.

  • Neurotoxin/Neuromodulator (Botox® / Dysport®): To smooth out dynamic wrinkles and prevent them from becoming static wrinkles.
